What these numbers mean.

This dashboard reads an official public police dataset and checks it hourly. Records can change as reports are reviewed, corrected, added, or removed.

Records, geography & refresh

Record model. Each row is an incident-report record from BPD’s Mark43 records-management system. The public export excludes records protected under Massachusetts law and includes a mix of crime and non-crime response descriptions.

Map geography. The map uses Boston’s 12 authoritative police-district polygons. Rows without a published district stay in the citywide total but cannot be assigned to a district polygon.

Refresh. Analyze Boston publishes a current 2023-to-present resource. This site checks its official datastore hourly and shows the latest occurrence date returned.

Interpretation. A police record is not a conviction, and a raw count is not a population-adjusted crime rate. Use the map to examine patterns inside one consistent source.
