This dashboard reads official public datasets. It does not scrape news stories or infer unreported incidents. A complaint is an allegation recorded by police, not a conviction. Counts can change when NYPD revises records.
Definitions & boundaries
Shot & killed means a victim row marked with NYPD’s statistical murder flag in the shooting dataset. Shot & wounded is every other published victim row. Murder complaints come from the separate complaint dataset and should not be expected to match the shooting-fatality count.
Current-year datasets cover complete reporting periods through . Unknown or null values remain part of totals even when omitted from a ranked chart.
Neighborhood map counts only records with valid coordinates that fall inside a residential 2020 Neighborhood Tabulation Area. These official statistical areas roughly correspond with commonly recognized neighborhoods but are not definitive neighborhood boundaries. Map values are raw counts, not population-adjusted crime rates.
